Henry's Property Taxes

Here are two tax statements - one for 1934 and one from ten years later. Nothing's typed; it's all handwritten. And although the property valuation stays the same, the taxes actually decrease between 1934 and 1944. The school taxes don't seem to be included anymore. The best part is that the tax collector agrees to receive tax payments at his home during specified hours.

  1. Great idea! All our obscenely-rich people should "inclose" their tax details on postcards sent to us as junk mail. Or interesting mail.
Our decent millionaires, though, are exempt.

  2. So I wonder if they shut down the schools? Maybe because of the Depression?

  3. How quaint, sort of looks like my check from lunch yesterday... I find the personalizing of the 'Taxman' with a name/home address quite interesting, probably ranked right up there with dentists for job title related depression! Not so folksy these days with the IRS, if the Beatles wrote the song now they would have to call it 'Taxmachine'.

  4. Isn't it funny to see old cards that disclose personal billing details for all the world to see? My, how things have changed!

  5. I've often thought it would be nice to be able to drop something off at the tax collector's home.

  6. Tattered and Lost,
I know what you're thinking - and they'd arrest you.
