Sepia Saturday - Your New Family

I was minding my own business (well, as much as I ever do) at a postcard show/sale when I came across this card in the sale bin. I really had no intention of buying it, because it's pretty creepy, but they were staring back at me so intently from the photograph. I guess I felt compelled...or threatened.  Now that I think back on it though - did I really buy the card? Or did I walk away without buying it, and then it showed up at my house in with the other cards anyway?  I just don't know, but maybe you would like to adopt this family and they can come live with you. Just say the word and they'll be on their way to your house.

If you check out the Sepia Saturday Blog, you can see other sepia photos of people with normal good looking families.

  2. O.K., J.

I think this means you have a new family. Bob will be running for the hills when he sees them coming...or maybe not. The guy in the middle looks just a little bit like Bob. Oh, and for those of you who aren't familiar with Bob, you can see him here: http://coulditbemadnessthis.blogspot.com/2010/02/holiday-bob.html

  4. People will be saying the same things about us in 100 years, actually, probably sooner...

  5. You are not just whistling Dixie. They are creepy. You know there is a jug and a hound dog near by.

  6. I wonder if we'll look this funny to people in the future? Pretty looking porch they're sitting on.. I'd love to look round the house too.

  7. I don't think the photography methods of the day helped the cause of a group like this. You can sense the anticipation in their eyes, as though they were expecting a huge flash or something.

  8. That's too funny.

I'd hate to be lost and turn up at that house to ask for directions.

  9. Very creepy -- I really love this picture and may have to write about this family.

  10. Anonymous is right; people will be doing the same thing with out picture (at least I hope so.) I love the idea of people making up stories and new names for us. As for this family, I agree with Martin. They were probably unaccustomed to having their picture taken, so they stared intently at the camera, probably trying not to move. So, they probably weren't creepy at all; it just appears that way.

  13. Yes, strangely compelling for me, as well. I am fascinated with them. It's a wonderful photo!

  14. They all do look so grim. Except that boy down front has a bit of a mischevious smile.

  15. I'd guess they were recent immigrants, because the hats look decidedly Eastern European to me. They certainly didn't put much effort into landscaping.

  16. Hi Christine, thanks for stopping by. I am trying to get around to all the SS posts. I agree with you they are probably a normal family not used to be photographed. Looks like they took care of their elders, or vise virsa. The woman has definitely got her hand on her man, it looks like.Maybe they have bad teeth. LOL This is lots of fun.

  17. I'm guessing that for alot of common folks at the time, photography was part luxury and part magic, so it wasn't natural to just relax and be photogenic. People may have had a couple pictures taken of them in their lifetime, unlike our current non-stop digital pix barrage where most stuff ends up in the delete box.

  18. They're probably just not used to having their photo taken. So many of the portrait subjects of yesteryear seemed incredibly sober, like portrait sitting was Very Serious Business. But, merciful heavens, I'm ashamed to admit that the first thing that went through my mind was "Lizzie Bordan took an axe ..."

  19. Not that creepy, or maybe I just lean towards the creepy. I don't think I'd want to hang out with them, but that's an intriguing photo.

  21. They are probably thinking: "Oh no this will probably be in the tabloids tomorrow!"

Even the kids are creepy in that picture.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  24. I love that picture, there's a sort of attraction in it's dowdiness. Amazing how nobody ever smiled ... even those having pictures taken in studios were sombre.

  25. Fabulous card, fabulous picture. It is the kind of picture which makes you want to digitally burn your own photo in there. Oh to be part of such a group. Excellent addition to Sepia Saturday.
