I feel like I've been here before. Maybe it was in the movie Motel Hell or Mountaintop Motel Massacre. In any case, I think I'd better head out before sunset.
A couple thoughts: 1) Does "sleep under cover in hot summer" suggest that folks usually just plopped down on the side of the road for the night prior to this motel existing?, and, 2) I wonder how much of the hill that they cut out at the rear of the building for construction ended up against the back wall after a few good, heavy rainfalls....
Wow! I'm a native North Carolinian and have never heard of Topton, or, thankfully, stayed at this motel. It's certainly much more Mo- than Ho-! I'm off to check the map . . .
I love antique postcards because they preserve evidence of everyday life as well as celebrations and sad events. Looking at an old postcard is like holding a single piece of a puzzle; we have to imagine the rest.
I will try to put up a postcard every day. If you have a special request for a particular city or place, let me know!

ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that the surrounding area is probably very scenic.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw this postcard, I thought, "geez...looks like a set from a slasher flick..." Then I read your caption. Great minds, thinking alike...
