Chi Omega Sorority - University of Oregon

I have posted a number of photo postcards and cabinet cards of unknown people, but never any that included my own family. For a change, I'll post one that does. Here we have the Chi Omega sorority at the University of Oregon in about 1954:
A nice group of wholesome girls. Any resemblance to the Belles of St. Trinian's is purely coincidental, although the movie was made in exactly that year, so it does make you wonder.

Which one's related to me? Well, the blond one in the back holding the plunger over her sorority sister's head is Betty, my mother. The only other one I know anything about is Allison LaRue (originally Leroux, and now McKay), who was is an actress and a dancer. She was also the Plumber's wife on the old Liquid Plumr ads. But my mother is holding the plunger; perhaps she should have been in those ads.

Last year, there was a post on The Lost Oregon Blog entitled Where Have You Gone Allison LaRue? I saw the post and thought the name sounded familiar, so I passed it on to my mother. As a result, there's an exchange of comments and some pictures on that blog, which is a very interesting site by any measure.
By the way, this post is part of a fun event called Sepia Saturday. Click here to see a wonderful assortment of old photos and read the compelling stories that accompany them.

  3. I like the girl with the cheroot almost as much as I appreciate the reference to Belles. Alistair Sim was one in a gazillion!

I'm so glad there's someone else who remembers and appreciates this movie. It's a classic. Alistair Sim is just a riot.

  7. I wish I knew the stories behind all the poses. Certainly there's some behind-the-scenes humor going on there.... I wonder about the event for which the photo was taken, and I wonder about the personalities of all the girls. I wonder if your mom has stories to tell. What a fun photo.

  8. I sure hope that plunger was brand new from the hardware store! And a big faux pas for me- all the years I have been familiar with this pic, I thought Betty was one of the other girls, oops...

  10. That is some photograph. You could look at those faces all day - you could write a sociological tract or two based on it. And an interesting story as well. Thanks.

  16. Oh, yes, for those who are asking which one is Allison. look at the picture and see which one appears to be the center of attention...star quality? She's the one with one finger pointed down and the other palm up. She was blond in the Liquid Plumr ads.

  17. This is priceless. I agree with the earlier comment that so personality is revealed in their poses that I'd love to go behind the scenes of this one!

  18. This photo is a conglomerate of the girls from back in the day when anybody who was anybody pledged sorority and then of course dressed in semi formals for photos while still having fun...I'd not heard of the Belles before and will have to add that to my Netflix que. Another great photo from the halls of Sepiahood!
