Although I have a wide variety of Easter cards, I have a number of them that have a nearly identical Easter Bunny. In a few cases, girls are covering the rabbit's eyes. I don't know why.
Card 1- creepy girl Card 2- cute girl Card 3- drunk, emaciated rabbit Card 4- pit bull rabbit Card 5- May Day Satan rabbit I think you pretty much covered the bases...
Possible reason behind the covering of the eyes. It could derive from the introduction of the Easter Bunny to America. In the 1700s in Pennsylvania, German settler folklore introduced "Oschter Haws".... "Oschter Haws" was a hare that would lay colored eggs in the nest(the children built nests out of their hats or bonnets) for good boys and girls. Children believed only if they were good that they would be rewarded with a visit from "Oschter Haws". The girls covering the eyes of the bunny may derive from children not wanting the easter bunny to see if they were bad....
I love antique postcards because they preserve evidence of everyday life as well as celebrations and sad events. Looking at an old postcard is like holding a single piece of a puzzle; we have to imagine the rest.
I will try to put up a postcard every day. If you have a special request for a particular city or place, let me know!
The top one is very interesting (although they are all very nice). It's almost as if St. Patrick's Day (girl) is hiding Easter.
ReplyDeleteCute and strange. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful cards. I especially like the first one.
ReplyDeleteHow amazing the bunny postcards. The little girl is playing peek a boo.

Giant Rabbits! AGHHH!!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing cards. How strange the girl is covering the rabbit's eyes!
ReplyDeleteThese kindle vivid memories. The images convey such positive, warm feelings.
ReplyDeleteThe girls appear to be hiding the rabbits' demonic red eyes. Are they Easter bunnies...or zombie rabbits?

ReplyDeleteAll your Easter postcards are delightful. The rabbit having his eyes covered is intriguing. The reason is probably lost in the mists of time.
