I have a postcard and stationery from the 'best hotel within 50 miles' in Farmville, Virginia. It doesn't seem to exist anymore, but I don't think it burned down...because it was advertised as fireproof.

Fireproof in the same way that the Titanic was unsinkable I suppose.
ReplyDeleteNot really such thing as a 'fireproof' building unless it is all concrete or protected steel, which this one probably isn't... Also pretty unlikely that all the furnishings, finishes, etc were non-flammable, I'm guessing that by installing sprinklers and a fire stair they considered the building 'fireproof'.
ReplyDeleteDiese großen alten Hotels haben einen ganz besonderen Charm.
ReplyDeleteIch mag sie gern, sie haben weniger Komfort aber dafüreine Geschichte
Liebe Grüße

Alan stole my comment! I'm always seeing hotel cards that claim their building to be fireproof. Humbug!
ReplyDeleteThere used to be the hotel St George in Nyack, NY that I found on old postcards. It was as beautiful as this one. Last time I was in NY, we went to Nyack to see if we could find it. The building was indeed still there, just not a hotel any more. It had been converted over into apartments and some commercial suites on the first floor. Nice to find out that the old building still survives. Maybe the same thing has happened to this one
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog every time I visit. :)
ReplyDeleteSydney - City and Suburbs
Still exists. It's for sale, I believe.
ReplyDeleteYup.. It's still there. It is for sale. The awnings are gone, the sign post isn't there anymore, it's above the entrance door. (not as nice as the post sign.) It's currently supporting Longwood University students as additional housing on floors 2,3,& 4. On the bottom right of the postcard you can see some rooms, but today there is a cafe there with outside seating extending from the building. I've been told that they have some amazing specials during the week. (I just brought my son back to Longwood yesterday, saw the hotel and we just spoke about it over dinner.)
