Here's a leather postcard with a strange little saying on the front. The address on the back appears to be burned in. Leather postcards were popular at the turn of the century. Although many of the designs are very beautiful and interesting, I can't say they're among my favorites. For whatever reason, I prefer paper postcards. This one's pretty interesting though.
I've never seen a leather postcard, how interesting.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know what a 'peek-a-boo' waist was, so looked it up online- I'm guessing times have changed a bit from what it used to be to what it is in today's fashions! I'm sure it was considered quite risque none the less, as phrase on the front suggests...
ReplyDeleteExtraordinary, impractical, expensive to produce and bizarre. What more could we want?
ReplyDeleteI think W. S. Heal made the best quality leather postcards.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of the nicer leather postcards. Strange message on it.

Fascinating stuff. I hadn't seen a leather postcard before. I love the risque message too and the way it was personalized with the addition of a name. Things like that underline that these were real people who lived and loved and joked and teased just like we do. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful post - and leather postcards are new to me too. I couldn't get the bit about the clock on her stocking : am I missing something?
ReplyDeleteI'm certain that at the turn of the century it would have been shocking for Frances to lift her skirt to get to her stocking to tell the time, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteIn the back of my mind is the memory of a leather postcard. I immediately dismissed it as not worth calling a postcard at all. It probably wasn't as likeable (or as old) as this one.
I see many leather postcards at flea markets, antique shops, but none as nice as this. Colors and the message are delightful.
