It's fun to find two postcards with the same title, especially All the Nice Girls Love a Sailor. Do you know the song?
The song was written and composed by A. Mills, but it was made famous by Hetty King (1883-1972) who sang it in 1905. Hetty was a male impersonator. You can hear a version by Ella Retford here.
Here are the backs of the cards in the same order.
The music in that song was typical of how it was in the early 1900s
ReplyDeleteThat's what they say happens in Portland when the Navy fleet pulls in during the Rose Festival each year, although I don't think the majority of the girls involved would qualify as 'nice' in this case...
ReplyDeleteMy mother warned me about sailors.
ReplyDeleteThe Mabel Lucie Atwell is instantly recognisable as her style. Both cards are charming.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that particular song, but since I am heavily influenced by the 70's I do recall All the Young Girls Love Alice by Elton John.
ReplyDeleteCute, cute, cute. I always find it interesting when children are performing in adults roles on postcards and greeting cards. I listened to part of the song at the link you provided. Do you think someone in 2011 could sing like that person sang? What makes the sound so different?
ReplyDeleteYes,A Great Music Hall Favourite! that Sailor Obviously Did have "A girl in every Port"!
