Hotel Plaza - Laredo, Texas

Here's Laredo's famous Hotel Plaza with its Spanish Grill. The hotel doesn't seem to be there anymore.

The message on the card, sent to Miss Rosalie Newcomb of San Antonio in 1943, reads:

Dear Roesel: This is where we are - bridal suite. It's raining cats outside. Say "hello" to Flo.
Love, Annette

  1. It reminds me a little of the Rock tavern, just up the road from us. I am sure you have noted the similarities.

  2. There seems to be quite an assortment of Laredo, Texas postcards out there, but I don't remember seeing this one before. I like the stylistic car....it's looong!!!

  3. Yes, very much like the Rock Tavern. They probably covered over their Juliet windows in the dining room long ago though.

  4. Sounds like it might tend to be a little warm in Laredo.... I'm trying to figure out how they fit 200 rooms into that building ('outside' ones, implying they had a window?), perhaps there was another wing not shown. And 'circulating ice water'- either there was a separate drinking water line attached to a chiller, a bellhop that came around with a pitcher, or everyone got REALLY cold showers!

  5. Circulating ice water is a type of air conditioning. At night, refrigeration units would make block ice. The ice would be stored in insulated chambers and during the day, tubes of water would pass through those chambers, and then circulate through the room walls and floors.
