I bought both of these photo postcards for their beatific smiles. Something about them radiates calm, warmth, trust, hope, honesty, and a total lack of malice. They act as a tonic to renew my faith in humankind. Am I reading too much into the photographs? Probably - but for a dollar or two a piece I think I got my money's worth. They both make me smile too.
Here are the backs of the cards in the same order. Based on the stamp boxes, both are from approximately the same time period: 1904-1920.

I like them both. Pleasant smile with meaning. The man is so proud of the child he is holding.
ReplyDeleteso true - they really do look as if they are genuinely happy.
ReplyDeleteBoth photos are absolutely wonderful...
ReplyDeleteGoing back through time. The first of the young boy with his well pressed suit. The pantaloons stocking and well polished button boots. I wonder if he is still alive today(likely not) and what life brought his way.
The proud young father with the gentle kind smile. Wonderful.
I can see the attraction. Both subjects appear unassuming, yet quietly confident.
ReplyDeletethanks for visiting my blog. i love these postcards, they are great photos!
ReplyDeleteI like the second one best; the pride in that man's face is just so lovely to behold. The little boy does look dapper in his jacket and trousers though. I think I'm going to be starting another hobby based on this postcard collecting thing.

Yes! They Both Radiate Warmth & Contentment.
ReplyDeleteSuch nice photos; was hoping the backs would reveal more about them; I have some portrait cards like this in my family collection--one was the Mystery bride I posted which after comments revealed she was likely not a bride but a pageant winner of some kind. I guess it was the practice at times to get photo cards made and shared?
ReplyDeleteThese cards are always so fun to look at -- they provide such fodder for the imagination. Did the young boy grow up to be a captain of industry or a pickpocket? Did the loving father desert his family during the Depression or become a war hero? The possibilities are endless.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes! You got more than your money's worth with these two! I want that boy to have grown up to be handsome, loving, responsible, and kind. Successful, too, of course. I want the dad to have had a healthy life and to have lived to old age with many grandchildren. Thanks for sharing these. Treasures.
ReplyDeleteI certainly see the warmth of human kindness in these. The visible affection of the father is clear.

I like them both. you can see the warmth in the faces of these people.
while you know not their history, to witness a moment of normalcy, even if posed, is comforting. may you provide such a smile to future generations as these gave one to you.

Love the second card - the proud father with his workman's boots but still wearing a tie.
ReplyDeleteThey made me smile too. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou could write a book about the smile of that chap on the second photograph. There's pride, joy, expectation - all rolled together. Wonderful.
