Tram Tuesday - Marseille, France

Back in 2011 I posted a colorful scene of streetcars on La Canebière in Marseille. Here are some more cards showing scenes of Marseille that include streetcars. The earliest trams in Marseille began service in 1876 and were pulled by horses.  As in most other places, the system slowly transitioned to electric power.  This first card, circa 1900,  appears to show horse-drawn and electric trams operating side by side.

Here's a close-up.

The tram system in Marseille has operated continuously, although the cars today are very sleek and modern in comparison to the ones shown here.

  2. Eventhough it is so old and in B&W the details are so clear.

  3. The one of Rue Cannebière has a lot of interesting details. It doesn't look very safe for all the people to be standing in the street like that, but maybe they were just standing there for the photograph.

  4. In the last card, the Quai des Belges, the majority of those buildings are still there.

  7. I want the top floor apartment in the building with the 'egg' on top... actually, maybe one floor down is better because it has all those balconies.

  8. Those trams mustn't have moved very fast. there is a gentleman meandering slowly across the street in the face of an oncoming tram, A kid standing really close to the rails...
