At a time when many families were posing stiffly for grim-faced portraits, the relaxed and cheerful Wyatt family of Coos Bay, Oregon was living it up for the camera.
I love this picture! Not only are they being silly and relaxed, but I like how the line of the walk leads up to the front door and how where they are placed oddly balances out the shot.
Thanks, being from Oregon I especially enjoyed it.
They do appear to be having good fun, perhaps it is because there does not appear to be a foundation under their house! Was it built on piers instead- perhaps hidden in the shadows- because it was by the water, or was it being moved to a new site and on temporary cribbing? The gangplank in lieu of stairs suggests either the move, or, that the house was finished recently and they hadn't built the stairs yet- but since there are plants growing around the house, recent construction does not seem likely... An amusing and intriguing photo.
Oh geez....I was that guy! There's scarcely a photo in existence of me, before the age of 15 or so, where I'm not making some sort of goofy face. I'm so ashamed.
A heartfelt thanks and farewell to my readers. My last post (the thousand and first!) will be on November 7, 2012. The blog will remain online, but there won't be any new posts as I need to make time for other things. There is a chance I'll be back, but if so it won't be for awhile. I hope you'll take the time to peruse the archives.
How To Find Things
There's treasure in the archives, so here's how to browse and find what you want:
1. Enter a search word or phrase in the box below - anything from Princess Grace to Prohibition or Graf Zeppelin.
2. Or, go down to the bottom of the page and browse the "Cloud of Tags". The number next to the tag indicates how many posts have that tag. Clicking on it will bring up all of them. (I realize now that it doesn't always bring up all of them. If there are a lot, then it will only bring up the most recent ones, but if you click on older posts at the bottom then it will bring up more.)
3. You can also go through the archives by date. Just click on the triangle next to the year or month to open the list.
I love antique postcards because they preserve evidence of everyday life as well as celebrations and sad events. Looking at an old postcard is like holding a single piece of a puzzle; we have to imagine the rest.
I will try to put up a postcard every day. If you have a special request for a particular city or place, let me know!
And wouldn't he have been popular (ha!) with the rest of the family!

I have some great old black and white family photos from the 20s, 30s and 40s; I should get some postcards made.
ReplyDeleteOhhhhh, they are fun! So great to find images like this. People coming alive instead of posing.
ReplyDeleteThose Wyatt's! Always known as the barrel of laughs of south coastal Oregon!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to think of them having so much fun on the photo shoot!
ReplyDeleteDas ist ein wirklich gelungenes familenportrait. da hatte wohl einer gar keine Lust darauf..

I'm sure the hen of the house wasn't happy about that face on the rare family made postcard. Haha.
