These are from a folder of negatives that belonged to Grace Shapley. Writing on the outside of the folder says: Negatives of Airplane trip, Aunt Bess and myself at 51 Lathrop Apt. and 13 John Street, Oquaga Lake, N.Y. , college negatives, etc. The folder also included some labelled photographs, taken in Syracuse and Binghamton, New York, as well as in Scranton, Pennsylvania. I have been able to identify some of the people in the photos, but not all of them.

These are terrific. I love the fashion detail -- the big collared coat, the striped jacket, the cloche hats. The obsession with flight. Says 1920s to me. The last picture looks older -- WWI era?
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful, especially the second one, you can almost feel the energy of the plane.
ReplyDelete~i love these photos~
ReplyDelete~there is something magical about old photos~
I agree with Lisa, while some of the 'energy' of the second image may just be scratches on the negative, some may also be debris being tossed about by the propeller- whatever the case, they combine with the angle of the plane and the perspective of the wings extending beyond the picture frame to give the shot a real dynamic feel. Not so sure about the 3rd image though, 'dynamic' is not a word I would use, perhaps 'clunky' or 'leaden' would be more appropriate for that aircraft...
ReplyDeleteHa, now I realize that shots 2 and 3 are of the same plane! Guess it all just depends on your pespective, as they say...
DeleteThat last photo cracks me up!
ReplyDeleteThere is something Bonnie and Clyde about the shots of the guy and gal at the trunk of the car. And his coat is the cats pajamas!
ReplyDeleteI like the two take-the-car-out-for-a-spin photos. Apparently she was a better photographer than him ...
