Hawthorne Boulevard in St. Louis is full of beautiful, well-preserved houses. I don't know if there are any little boys riding ponies down the street anymore, but it looks little changed since 1906 when this card was sent.
Here's the same place now:

Good structures are sometimes allowed to live centuries rather than be torn down every 60 years.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to see the comparison. The back of the postcard is great, too!
ReplyDeleteExtraordinary! Pile upon pile of very comfortable, very bourgeois (that's a compliment) houses, like Shaker Heights in Cleveland. My grandparents on both sides enjoyed some financial comfort (not at the above level), but somehow I get the creepy feeling I'd be the harried, underpaid 72-hour a week retail manager downtown while the Merchant King I worked for disported himself in the library on Hawthorne! BTW--are the carriage houses visible? Don't see any.:-) Jack/Youngstown Jack/Youngstown
ReplyDeletewonderful before and after post - the reverse of the card is amazing too... i can't make out the name of the company, but i just love their logo!
ReplyDeleteJ/Y, I would guess there are carriage houses at the back of the lots. The porte cochere of the stone house is visible thru the trees on the old photo, in the new one the curb cut/drive is much more prominent, it is possible they converted the porte cochere to a garage.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anon.! Had to screw up my eyeballs a bit, but I spotted it. Jack/Youngstown
ReplyDeleteChristine,
ReplyDeleteIf you have or ever come across another card with that kind of postcard back design, I would sure do a swap with you! I luv that lady! Too neat!
