Marie Blowing Bubbles

 
Marie Studholme was a British actress and singer, born in 1872. She started her stage career in 1891 at the Lyric Theatre in London, and starred in many musical comedies after that.  Because of her beauty, and perhaps her charm, she was widely photographed. In 1904, Marie brought a successful lawsuit against a London dentist who altered her image and used it to advertise his services. She retired from the stage in 1915.

    Too bad she didn't just trade for free dental work! But Marie.... you've already had your teeth cleaned 3 times this week! What an unusual card! I just love it:)

    She has such an interesting face. Not conventionally beautiful, yet still a beauty in personality and smile. I love this postcard! And I love bubbles.

    Way to 'STICK' with the theme! I wonder if that was what the dentist was using her image for - the benefits of chewing gum.

    I wonder in what way the dentist altered her image. It can't have been easy in those days but must have still been recognisably her, for her to sue him.

    I wondered about that too. In the days before Photoshop, it can't have been quite as easy. I sort of imagine him blacking out a couple of teeth for the before picture or something along those lines.

    i wonder what sort of altering was done way back then? interesting how image misappropriation for profit has been a lawsuit even then!
